How to order cut vinyl wall letters with Decalsontime.com
Wall lettering is a creative way to embellish blank wall spaces both indoors and outdoors. Below are a few tips to help us...help you, get the wall lettering you want and need.
Determine a size for your wall lettering.
Most walls are fairly expansive so there is a good chance you have a lot of room to work with. Choosing a size for your wall lettering depends largely on how much of the wall you want to take up. We suggest you measure the available wall space to make sure your wall lettering will fit. Wall letters are roughly as wide as they are tall so you'll need to make sure the letters will fit. Simply multiply the letter height by 0.85 and then multiply that number times the amount of total characters needed for each line of text.
(PLEASE NOTE: Orders in excess of $ 200.00 may be subject to discounted pricing, please call us at (866) 267-4467 to discuss.)
Choose a vinyl type.
For wall lettering there are two different options of vinyl: Intermediate and High-Performance. Choosing your wall lettering vinyl is crucial to the letters adhering properly to the surface. For smooth walls you can opt for intermediate vinyl; but for walls that have even the tiniest amount of texture you'll want to order high-performance vinyl.

Vinyl Wall Letter Choices - Most Popular
Intermediate (Standard) Calendered Vinyl
Intermediate cut vinyl has a thickness of 3mm and is ideal for just about any smooth, non-porous substrate (glass, painted wood, aluminum, plastic, etc.). Intermediate vinyl will typically last for 5 - 7 years without any fading, cracking or peeling depending on the severity of exposure to the elements. Intermediate vinyl is typically applied to the face or outside of a surface, but can be mirror cut, to be applied to the back or behind a surface (i.e. the inside of a glass door, backside of a clear acrylic piece, etc.) Intermediate vinyl letters can also be ordered separately or coupled with digitally printed decals to create visually stunning graphics as well.
INTERMEDIATE VINYL LETTERS WORK WELL FOR:
- Windows (interior and exterior)
- Short-term or temporary use on Cars, Trucks, Vans & Boats
- Smooth Walls (not recommended for textured walls)
- Smooth Floors (short term use)
- Smooth substrates like plexiglass, aluminum, acrylic, steel, corrugated plastic, PVC, vinyl banners and more.
High-Performance (Premium) Caste Vinyl
High-performance cut vinyl has a thickness of 2mm and is ideal for smooth or slightly textured surfaces. High-performance cut vinyl is slightly thinner than intermediate vinyl and has a more aggressive adhesive making it ideal for vehicle graphics or vehicle wraps especially where the vehicle in question has bolts, ridges, molding, indentions or contours of any kind. High-performance cut vinyl typically last 7 - 10 years and withstands the elements and repeated cleanings very well. High-performance vinyl can also be cut to accommodate inside or outside applications.
HIGH-PERFORMANCE VINYL LETTERS WORK WELL ON:
- Long term use on all vehicle types...car, truck, van, boat, etc.
- Textured or contour surfaces like floors, walls, vehicles, etc.
- Extended long term use on outdoor substrates like plexiglass, aluminum, vinyl banners, MDO wood signs, PVC, steel, etc.)
Reflective vinyl is a specialty vinyl that is predominantly used for signage that requires night visibility. During daylight, reflective vinyl letters, will appear just as normal vinyl lettering; but as soon as the sun goes down the reflective properties of this slightly metallic looking vinyl take over, and when a light source passes over the vinyl, it reflects light back which results in a slightly illuminated look. Besides being used for cut vinyl lettering, reflective vinyl can accommodate digital printing, thus creating fully custom reflective digital decals as well.
REFLECTIVE VINYL LETTERS WORK WELL FOR:
- Taxi's, work trucks, bicycles, motorcycles, etc.
- For emergency vehicles like police cars, ambulances, medical transports, fire trucks, etc.
- Parking lot markers or directional signs that need to be seen at night
- Road signs on public or private streets for night time identification
Metallic vinyl is another specialty vinyl that adds a little more flair to your cut vinyl letters by having a slightly metallic look that is produced by mixing in tiny metal flakes when creating the vinyl material. While the metallic look of this particular specialty vinyl is not overtly noticeable like metallic paint jobs, it does give your vinyl lettering a bit of sparkling diversity over regularly colored vinyl. We predominantly stock Gold and Silver metallic vinyl, but upon request, can order other available metallic vinyl colors.
METALLIC VINYL LETTERS WORK WELL FOR:
- Numbers and letters for offices, buildings or housing
- Outdoor use for identification, branding or decoration.
- In combination with vehicle decals or custom graphics.
- Indoor or outdoor suite signs
Gold mirror vinyl and Silver mirror vinyl have the appearance of a polished metal. Both of these specialty vinyls are sometimes mistaken for metallic vinyls, but unlike the flaky look of metallic vinyl, gold and silver mirror vinyls actually mimic an actual mirror by reflecting back an image.
GOLD/SILVER MIRROR VINYL WORKS WELL FOR:
- Residential or commercial lettering and numbering
- In combination with window or wall decals and graphics
- On vehicles for more decorative numbering and lettering
- Office suite signs for interior or exterior use.

Frequently asked wall lettering questions
WHAT VINYL IS BEST FOR WALL LETTERING?
This really all depends on the wall itself. For completely smooth walls you can use intermediate vinyl. For walls with any sort of texture, high performance vinyl is the way to go with wall lettering. High performance vinyl is thinner and has a more aggressive adhesive so it can conform to textured walls much better than intermediate vinyl.
WILL REMOVING THE WALL LETTERING CAUSE ANY DAMAGE TO THE WALL ITSELF?
When and if you decide to remove your vinyl wall lettering there should never be any damage to the underlying wall surface or paint job. The only thing you might experience is some residual adhesive on the wall. This can be removed though with special cleaners.
HOW DO I CHOOSE A WALL LETTER SIZE?
As with all other vinyl lettering, choosing your wall letter size comes down to available space and the amount of information being displayed. Walls typically offer up a lot of surface area and can accommodate larger sized wall letters. To best determine the size of your wall lettering, simply measure your walls (left to right; top to bottom); figure out how much of the wall you'll be utilizing for your wall lettering; choose a size and multiply that height by 0.85 to determine the width of a wall letter (i.e. a 5 inch tall letter measure 4 1/4 inches wide); and then count up your characters and multiple the width of the wall letter by the number of total characters. This formula will help you determine if the lettering will fit the wall or the allotted wall space area your wall lettering is intended to use. (NOTE: If your chosen wall lettering size is to big you can either choose a smaller size or try and break up your lettering on multiple lines.)
DO I HAVE TO PROVIDE AN ART FILE FOR MY WALL LETTERING?
If you have an art file to supply for your wall lettering that is a bonus, but not a necessity. We have a graphic design team that can create an art file for you based on your specific wall lettering needs. If you need design help, we'll just need to have you pick a vinyl color and lettering font, and we'll take care of the rest.
IS WALL LETTERING EASY TO INSTALL?
For the most part, that is a yes. Larger wall lettering pieces may require two people to complete the wall letter installation process, but typically wall lettering can be installed by one person with ease. Please see our video on "How to Install Vinyl Letters ", that features step-by-step visual and audio instructions on the vinyl lettering installation. We also offer an inexpensive Vinyl Application Kit, that can be ordered in conjunction with your wall lettering purchase, that includes written instructions, a squeegee and a vinyl application solution to help aide with do-it-yourself wall letter installations.
WHAT ABOUT EXTERNAL WALL LETTERING?
Since our wall lettering utilizes colored vinyl it can be used indoors or outdoors and will typically last 5 to 7 years with intermediate vinyl and 7 to 10 years with high performance vinyl. Please keep in mind that the longevity of external wall lettering can be compromised and fade a lot quicker if the vinyl is applied to an area that receives a lot of direct sunlight exposure.
